HVAC System: Repair vs Replace Guide — Toronto 2026
The 40% Rule
If the repair cost exceeds 40% of the installed replacement cost, replace the system. Example: $2,000 repair on a system whose replacement costs $4,500 — replace.
When to Repair
- System is under 10 years old with a single component failure (capacitor, flame sensor, circuit board)
- Repair cost is less than 25% of replacement cost
- No history of multiple breakdowns in recent years
When to Replace
- System is 15+ years old (furnace) or 12+ years old (AC) with a major component failure
- Running on R-22 refrigerant (AC/heat pump) — discontinued
- Compressor failed on an older system
- Multiple repairs needed within 2–3 years
- Efficiency is dramatically lower than today’s equipment (old 60% AFUE furnace vs 96% AFUE)
Should I repair or replace my HVAC system in Toronto?
Use the 40% rule: if repair cost exceeds 40% of replacement cost, replace. Replace furnaces that are 15+ years old with major failures, or ACs that are 12+ years old with compressor failure. Repair younger systems with single-component failures under 25% of replacement cost. Madina Mechanical provides honest repair-vs-replace assessments. Call (416) 424-4328.
